Local Clubs are the grassroots of Altrusa International, Inc. It is at the local level, in our own communities, that social issues and concerns are addressed and community service results.
Altrusa International Inc., of Richmond, Virginia is the oldest club
in District Two.
1923 Altrusa Club of Richmond organized.

1925 September Charter granted.

1923-1938 Job clinics for older women.           

1940-1947 Participation in civilian wartime activities. Altrusan elected first president Richmond Council of Women's Organizations. Conducted series of radio broadcasts to aid in reducing juvenile delinquency

1949-1955 Project for children in MCV rheumatic fever ward.
Westhampton Student Award established.
Purchased organ for chapel at State Industrial Farm for Women.
Sponsored Red Cross Home Nursing Class.
Parties-with-a-Purpose initiated.           
Sponsored first recipient of Founders Fund Vocational Aid.
Co-sponsored two German women through State Department's
Educational Exchange Program.
First Baby-sitters' Class held.           
Purchased station wagon for YWCA's decentralized program.

1956-1964 Club named as Honor Club in Women's Home Companion Magazine
Participated in organization of Northern Virginia club.
Set the pace for Richmond's support of BOOKS USA.
Purchased piano for Boys' Club.

1965-1973 Assisted in organization of Petersburg Club.  
Installation of handrails at Virginia Home.
Music scholarships granted.
Adopted Learning Disability Center and Foster Parents Plan as projects.
Sponsored Grants-in-Aid recipient from Thailand.
Sponsored Grants-in-Aid recipient from Hong Kong.  

1974-1977 Adopted Boys' Club of Richmond Experiential Theatre.
Donated audiometer to Child Study Center

1978 Established Edith W. Nelson/Altrusa Scholarship.
Conducted first Laubach tutor trainer workshop.
Sponsored Grants-in-Aid recipient from  Korea.

1979-1981 Supplied equipment for visual aids department for New Community School.
Sponsored the following:  Literacy Workshops, two FFVA recipients and Learning Disabilities Conference for Professionals.
Special scholarship award to Judy Logan, Miss Wheelchair of Virginia contestant.
Made supplemental scholarship award for Geriatric Nursing Assistance Training Program at Westminster-Canterbury.
Purchased video equipment for New Community School.

1982 Provided fence for YWCA's home for battered women.
Arranged to have a local company donate a wheelchair for a participant in the
Miss Wheelchair Virginia Pageant.  
Opened Literacy Council of Metropolitan Richmond, September 1982.            

1983 Celebrated 60th anniversary of the Altrusa Club of Richmond.
Initiated the Ruth B. Cease Membership Award.

1984-85 Contributed funds for Life Planning Seminars to Women's Resource Center, University of Richmond.
Hosted luncheon for Richmond Area Foster Grandparents Program.  
Literacy Council incorporated in 1985.  
Furnished additional audiovisual equipment for New Community School.

1986-88 Hosted Luncheon for Foster Grandparents; raised over $5,000 for Literacy.
Established the Altrusa Read Outs.

1989-90 Adopted the Child Care and Learning Center.
Participated in "Read Richmond Read."
Participated in Adopt a Highway
Adopted Harrowgate Elementary School.

1992 Hosted 10th Anniversary Celebration for Literacy Council.  
Co-sponsored 1st Virginia New Reader Congress.
Recognized for volunteerism by Capital Area Agency on Aging.

1994 Supported Capitol Area On Aging in producing Resource Guide to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.  

1995-1997 Hosted the Grandparent's tea (1995) and hosted the Grandparent's luncheon.
Continued the school shower - giving supplies for children at risk at Harrowgate and Crestview Schools.
Sponsored and participated in the Executive Spelling Bee an event on behalf of The Richmond READ Center(The Literacy Council's new name)
Worked the coffee booth (1995), the Moon Walk (1996) and the Chocolate Booth (1997) at the Boy's and Girl's Club, Inc. of Richmond, VA International Food Festival.
